WhatsApp users can now make individual voice and video calls through the WhatsApp Desktop application. This service is equipped with end-to-end encryption to ensure the security of communication.
This feature is added to facilitate communication for those who are separated from their loved ones and still adjusting to new ways of working.
“Therefore, we want conversations on WhatsApp to feel as close to face-to-face as possible, regardless of location or device used,” WhatsApp said in a written statement on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
“Making calls on a larger screen will make it easier for you to collaborate with coworkers, allow you to see your family more clearly, or enable you to do other things while chatting.”
Video Calling Whatsapp Desktop
WhatsApp states that for the convenience of users, the video call feature on desktop has been designed to be used without any problems both in portrait and landscape orientation.
“Desktop calls are displayed as a separate window that can be resized and always stay in front, so you don’t have to search for video calls among browser tabs or stacks of open windows,” WhatsApp explains.
In this initial stage, WhatsApp emphasizes that the service provided is only for individual calls and in the future, this feature will be expanded to include group voice and video calls.

To make or receive calls on WhatsApp Desktop, you need:
- An audio output device and microphone for voice and video calls.
- A camera for video calls.
- An active internet connection on both your computer and phone. Calls will not be made through your phone, but your phone needs to be online for the calls to be made.
- Granting permission to WhatsApp to access your computer’s microphone and camera. WhatsApp requires access to your computer’s microphone for calls and camera for video calls.
